Modifications and upgrades to cell sites
The Japanese electronics giant, NEC, has a contract with Airwave (the emergency services network) to replace the lease lines that connect their sites together (backhaul) with a new microwave link based network. The vast majority of the new links will be installed on existing sites which require modifications to the physical (passive) infrastructure to facilitate the network (active) equipment.
As part of the network roll out programme, NEC called upon the vastly experienced Merlin Wireless & Fibre Services Site Build team to carry out the required works on sites owned by, and rented from, private landlords. This included various site types from greenfield towers, structures shared with other operators and complex installations on building roof tops.
The project included the supply and installation of structural support steelwork for mounting the dish antenna equipment, and in some instances, additional feeder cable management systems to connect the antennas and outdoor units (ODU) to the radio equipment and multiplexors, or indoor units (IDU).
The new microwave equipment would not work without power, therefore, in most cases modifications and upgrades were required to the electrical supply equipment to facilitate the network upgrade. This was provided by the Merlin Wireless & Fibre Services team, not only on private landlord sites, but on sites owned by Multi Site Providers such as Arqiva.
The project involved works on over 2,200 sites and was part of a wider services provision to NEC on this project, including line-of-sight (LoS), site acquisition and town planning and design services.
